How AI is changing the work behind bespoke travel

AI is changing travel. The bigger shift is how journeys are created.

AI is already everywhere in travel—or at least, the word is.
A growing number of tools promise AI-powered itinerary creation. But look more closely at how many of them work and the professional is still doing much of the itinerary assembly manually.

Flights are entered. Hotels are added. Transfers are added. Activities and other trip details are selected or inserted. Once those elements are in place, generative AI can help organize them into an itinerary, write the narrative around each day and turn the information into a polished presentation.

Some platforms go further by allowing previously created elements to be stored in galleries or libraries, then dragged into a future itinerary and reused.

These tools can be useful. They can save time in itinerary production and presentation.

But there is an important distinction between using AI to present a journey and using AI to help create one.

There is also another approach becoming increasingly common: using general-purpose generative AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude to build a trip through prompts.

This is possible. A travel professional can provide a destination, describe the client and their preferences, ask for recommendations and progressively prompt the AI to develop an itinerary. With enough prompting, checking, correcting and restructuring, it can become a useful working process.

But the professional is still orchestrating that process: deciding what to ask, breaking the request into individual tasks, evaluating the answers, asking for alternatives and bringing everything together.

For us, the opportunity for AI in luxury travel goes considerably further.

Is an itinerary the same thing as a bespoke journey?

Travel is often organized around a familiar set of components: flights, hotels, transfers, restaurants, tours and activities.

They are important. They make the trip possible.

But they are not necessarily what makes a journey bespoke.

A client may say that food is one of the reasons they travel. The answer does not have to be another restaurant reservation. It might be meeting a producer, discovering a local tradition, entering a kitchen normally closed to visitors, spending time with the person behind a particular product, or connecting several of those moments into an experience that could only make sense in that place.

The same is true of art, history, architecture, nature, adventure, celebration, privacy, family time or simply the desire to experience a destination differently.

Those wishes do not always fit neatly into a box labeled activity.

And this is where the difference between assembling an itinerary and creating a bespoke journey becomes important.

An itinerary can organize where a client stays, how they move and what they do.

A bespoke journey has to consider what this particular client wants to experience.

What if AI started with the brief?

This was one of the questions behind The Key AI.

Instead of asking the professional to build the trip first and then using AI to organize, write or present it, we wanted to start earlier.

With the client request.

A client brief can contain much more than a destination, dates and budget. It can tell us who is traveling, why they are traveling, what interests them, what they wish to experience, the pace they prefer, the atmosphere they imagine and the moments that could make the journey meaningful to them.

That is where Bespoke Experiences Studio (BES) begins.

The professional introduces the client request, and BES works from that brief to research and develop the journey itself.

It looks for possibilities relevant to that particular request. It brings different services and experiences together. It develops the structure and flow of the journey and turns those elements into a complete bespoke journey proposal for the professional to review, adjust and make their own.

The difference is fundamental.

Instead of asking:

What have you already chosen, and how should we organize and present it?

we start with:

Given this client request, what could we create?

Every journey begins again with the brief

BES was not conceived around galleries of previous journeys or templates waiting to be adapted.

There is no previous itinerary that needs to be dragged into the next one and modified until it feels different.

Every journey begins again with the brief.

Two clients can travel to exactly the same destination, at exactly the same time and with a similar budget—and the right journey for each can be completely different.

One may want privacy, space and an unhurried pace. Another may want energy, discovery and constant engagement with the destination.

A couple celebrating an anniversary will not necessarily want the same experience as a family traveling across generations. Someone returning to a destination for the fifth time requires a different approach from someone discovering it for the first.

Destination, dates and budget are therefore only the beginning.

Preferences, wishes, interests, mood, atmosphere, pace, occasion and the people traveling influence what the journey should become.

That is why we believe AI in luxury travel needs to do more than generate text around information already entered by the professional.

It needs to participate meaningfully in the work of creating the journey from the brief.

And where does the travel professional fit?

At the center.

Giving AI a greater role in research and journey creation does not make professional expertise less important.

It makes the distinction between information and expertise even clearer.

AI can help find possibilities. But knowing that a place or experience exists is not the same as knowing whether it is right for a particular client.

Something can look extraordinary on paper and still be wrong for the person traveling.

The professional brings knowledge built through experience, an understanding of the client, relationships, judgment and something much harder to reproduce: the ability to recognize when all the individual elements come together in the right way.

As access to information becomes easier, that judgment becomes more valuable, not less.

The differentiator is increasingly not simply who can find the information, but who knows what to do with it.

A different role for AI in luxury travel

This is where AI can make a real difference in luxury travel.

Not replacing the professional.

Not taking an itinerary that has already been assembled and simply making it look better.

And not turning bespoke travel into a faster way of combining the same reusable components.

The opportunity is to give the professional intelligent support much earlier in the process—from the moment the client request arrives.

Research can happen faster. Possibilities can be explored more deeply. Different services and experiences can be brought together around the brief. A complete journey can take shape without the professional having to start every stage from a blank page.

BES does not currently source or add flights and hotels; these can be added manually by the professional. Transfers can be included when required in the brief or added manually.

The focus of BES is different: the creation and development of the bespoke experience itself.

And that is also why speed, although important, is not the whole story.

A process that once required days of research, development and presentation can be transformed dramatically. But the objective is not to make luxury travel faster for the sake of speed.

It is to give the professional more capacity for the work where their expertise matters most.

Because AI may change how a journey is researched, developed and presented.

But understanding the client, recognizing what will be exceptional for them and knowing when something is truly right still belongs to the professional.

The professional standard. At AI speed.
